Datura is a type of plant that has been used for centuries for its toxic and hallucinogenic effects, most specifically Datura stramonium a.k.a Jimson Weed or devil’s weed. It is not recommended for use because it can cause immediate blindness or permanent photophobia. (image via)
In Hinduism, Lord Shiva was known to smoke Cannabis and Datura. People still provide the small green fruit of Datura during festivals and special days as offerings in Shiva temples. Although devotees smoke Cannabis as a devotional practice during religious festivals like Shivaratri, they do not smoke Datura, whose effects can be unpredictable and sometimes fatal.
